Come Experience a

Self-Guided Walking Trail of fabled Maplewood Cemetery

Maplewood Cemetery, located at 611 North 5th Street in Mayfield, includes many sites of interest, most notably the Wooldridge Monuments, known as “The Strange Procession that Never Moves.”  Henry G. Wooldridge was an eccentric aristocrat who chose to use his wealth to have monuments created to memorialize himself and his favorite family members and animals.  The figures were built from 1892 until Colonel Wooldridge’s death in 1899 and have been featured in “Ripley’s Believe it or Not,” the movie, “In Country,” and on the cover of the book, “Weird Kentucky.” The site also is a stop on the Kentucky After Dark Paranormal Passport, which highlights Kentucky’s spookiest sights.

The self-guided tour begins by scanning a QR code located at the Wooldridge Monument and then directs visitors to QR codes at three other stops in the cemetery including Angel Rock, erected by William Slayden for his wife and children; Mary Lois Roach, Kentucky’s first female sheriff; and the Lawrence and Drew families’ mass gravesite. The Tourism Commission intends to add additional points of interest in the future.
